Never Going Back, her debut on Telarc set for release on February 24, 2009, captures Copeland at a crossroads on that artistic path – a place where numerous new avenues are open to her. While Copeland will always remain loyal to her blues roots, Never Going Back takes a more forward view of the blues, and in so doing points her music and her career in a new direction.

I have a couple questions. 1st off I am 26 years old and tried to play a guitar when I was like 14 and didn't have the internet or anyone around me to show me anything. I finally got the internet and there were tabs.. used those but still didn't understand much. well now that I am older and the internet seems to have lots of forums and youtube and all these sites that make it easier for me to understand stuff . I might give it a go. i've been really interested in guitar lately from playing that darn rockband and guitar hero games and I was thinking of getting a begginer guitar set up and trying top play the real thing. I know I prolly won't end up in a band or be all that great at it but still wanna try to learn some and play on my spare time even tho everyone i told says I am too old to learn and its too hard to play and all that and it just comes natural to some and not to others. anyways heres my questions I was looking at a complete setup with guitar and amp kit. I know these are cheap but its all I can afford right now. I can spend prolly under 300 for everything. whats the best to get out of these kits? a squier fender, th g-310 sg or the les paul II ??? I can get a pedal for these set ups to make effects sounds right? what pedal is good? I seen the digitech 50. any of these even worth it? help please!!!

I've been able to get some pretty rockin' tones by plugging an acoustic, especially my 12-string detuned to C#sus4 with a soundhole pickup, into an amp with distortion. It's good for recording, if you can control the feedback! I've seen a number of players do this live, and some sound better than others. I do a couple of songs in my performance where I split the signal between distortion and clean to give a 2-guitar sound, and one sound clarifies and compliments the other quite well too.

i see there are a couple of die hard tube fans here. figured it would be fun to have a discussion about tube/sold state amp pros cons, preferences etc let the debate begin.

personally i don't have a problem with solid state amps (at least the better ones) many of the newer ones do have a decent tone and can get good distortion. i don't care for digital modeling as it tends to be cold and everyone sounds the same using it. ss amps are alot more affordable to the begining and medium stage player. you also will often get a higher watt rating for the money. i find that many players have been brainwashed into believing that all ss is crap and they aren't really willing to give them a try. it may take some time and effort to get a good sound but this is true of any amp that is new to you. for the record i use a MARSHALL MG100DFX amp (1x12) and have gotten some excellent sound from it. i goose it with an ibanez tube screamer for that extra umph for soling. i don't really use the built in effects much just a little reverb and delay that is back in mix to give the sound a little depth.

ok i think we all know that its tough to beat a great tube amp for sound. this i can't dispute. the biggest problem is cost for tube amps. a 100 watt 1x12 Marshall would have cost me about $600-700 more than what i paid for the ss one i have. power tubes aren't cheap to replace and changing them can affect your sound greatly. tubes can be unpredictable, of course thats where the magic lies. it also can be a bit of a curse. for the record i've owned several all tube amps over the years. i currently use a LEGEND ROCK & ROLL 50 (this is an early 80s hybrid -all tube preamp ,solid state power amp) i put a boss ds-1 in front and run the amp clean by doing this i can get the van halen brown sound.

so what every one think

OK, here's the deal. I'm a 43-year-old guy who's decided it's finally time to learn how to play the electric guitar. I already had my mid-life crisis a few years ago, but the fact remains that I've been on a nostalgia trip lately listening to some of my favorite bands of the past like The Wipers, X, and Nirvana.

I also have two young boys [ages 7 and 8] both of whom want to learn electric guitar, while my daughter [age 10] plans to handle lead vocals in the style of Siouxsie and Exene.

So: I need some guitar and amp recommendations to get me and my boys started. What follows is an ad hoc "wish list" of sorts.

1. I'm thinking about buying some kind of used Fender Mustang. It looks cool (especially the sky blue ones), the Mustang was allegedly Kurt Cobain's favorite guitar, and it has the all-important whammy bar. But it shouldn't cost more than $350-$400 used. Don't know if this means that I'll need to find a Mustang knock-off. A nice used Jaguar might work, too.

2. I have pretty small hands, so if possible a small neck might fit me and my boys better. I think I read that the Mustang fits small-handed players well.

3. I have no idea what to look for in a used guitar, so any suggestion would be appreciated. I've bought used guns online sight-unseen, but I'm not sure if this is a good idea with a used electric guitar.

4. I also need some used amp suggestions. Again, I'm clueless. I'd like an amp in the $200-$300 range (tops) that has a lot of cool features but that will be used primarily to ouput to headphones.

Overall, pretty wicked. The acoustic modelling is a little weak, as expected. The baritone is five star - no extra long scale or flappy strings. With some practise, you could play in standard tuning, flip the dial, and lay down a slide solo in open G!

The hefty price tag is almost worth it - it won't replace all your guitars, but it will replace most of them.

Dear Friends,

Zen Blues Quartet©, and Shunyata Records®, is proud to announce the release of the Band's 2nd CD, "Again and yet again"!! Following up the well received debut Album "Zen Blues Quartet", this CD moves to another level altogether, as a powerful and unique voice in Modern Blues Music!

ZBQ is:
Mike Finnigan - B3 and Vocals, (Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, Peter Frampton, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr, Dave Mason, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Rait, Crosby Stills and Nash...), Steve Ferrone - Drums (Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Average White Band...), Tim Scott - Bass and lead vocals (Jack Mack, Tower of Power, Robben Ford, Stevie Wonder...) and John March - guitars, producer and mixer.

This is an explosive and amazing CD of Modern Blues and Soul music, with unbelievable vocal performances by Mike Finnigan and Tim Scott, great funky grooves and burning Guitar!!

Zen Blues Quartet is comprised of some of the best session musicians, who have worked as sidemen for the some greatest Blues, Soul and R&B artists in the world. (Please see credits list below). Zen Blues was originally formed as an opportunity to play Blues the way the musicians wanted to, without being beholden to a Label or specific Artist. The first CD was done as an experiment in Art for the sake of good Art, and it did exceedingly well. The new CD is a tour de force exploration of Modern Blues. Like nothing you have heard before!!

Veteran sideman and B3 virtuoso Mike Finnigan has joined the band as the new Keyboard player and Vocalist extraordinaire!! Plus we have the LA Horns featuring: Bill Churchville on Trumpet,
(Willie Nelson, Joe Cocker, Elton John, Rickie Lee Jones), Rev. Dave Boruff on Tenor and Alto Saxes (Everyone!! lol),, and Ed Wynne on Baritone and Tenor saxes. Plus many special guests sitting in on the CD, Marty Greb on Keyboards, (Bonnie Rait, Aaron Neville, Rick Danko), Curtis Salgado on Blues Harp, (Robert Cray, Steve Miller, Santana), Carmen Grillo on Vocals, (Tower of Power and Sons of Champlin), and many others!!

Comments on the new CD:
"At a time where the Music Industry is changing rapidly, and it seems that great music is forgotten, Zen Blues Quartet is the proverbial Light at the end of the tunnel!" Rabid ZBQ fan!!!

"This project started with the belief that basically we all missed hearing great tunes, with a sense of something powerful and just a a little bit dangerous. Music, at least for me, has gotten a bit formulaic and I wanted to make something that took chances and explored powerful spaces. I think I have always wanted to make one great recording that just shows what happens when good players get in a room and really tear it up! I am honored and proud to have made such a beautiful and powerful CD with such great musicians. Every time I hear Mike or Tim sing I am reminded of why I wanted to play music in the first place. That powerful, hair standing up on the back of your neck, chills up and down your spine, heart pounding feeling, that only happens when you are hearing the real deal! Mike and Tim are the real deal, and I am proud to have been able to help bring this Music out into the world!" John March Guitarist/Producer for ZBQ

If you pre-ordered your CD it will soon be in your hands!!! We are going to ship by 11/29!!!

If not, well what are you waiting for??Just in time for the holidays for you and all your friends and family!!! The perfect stocking stuffer!!! ;)
I am looking for a new double humbucker to put in my 57 re-issue strat to accomodate a sound for reggae. I am in love with junior murvins sound (the wailers) and would give my left arm to know what equipment he used back in the day... not that i want his exact sound... but it would get me on the right track. I am infact keen to know how to get any of the classic sounds you hear in reggae. and if you listen to alot of it, you'l know what im talkin about. I play second guitar in a reggae band... which is the cat the plays all the bass lines, but on guitar. (its generally a sound that requires very little bass in it, so it sits nicely ontop of the bass guitar)
If any of you guitarists can recommend a good strong sounding pickup ideal for this style, it would be appreciated.
Jah bless

It's not a Parker...this link to the Parker website is the only place I have found where there is a good whole-body image of the MatraX. Even the guitar's own website, www.harmosmusic.com/ , does not have a really good picture of the guitar (at least as of today).

Anyway I'm calling attention to it because it brags about no heel limitation for access to the top frets. However looking closely at a few of the images, I'm nor sure it offers quite the degree of top-fret-freedom that is implied. The guitar is thick, there is some apparatus under the top frets that could interfere depending on how you hold your guitar, and for all the talk about no limitation due to the heel, it looks to me like there actually is quite some degree of heel present there. The truly heel-less Parker of course has its own issues - it's still a bit of a reach to the top frets on a Fly Mojo... Anyway, it's interesting to see this thing, isn't it?

This post is also on the SOUKOUS GUITAR! tribe - we discuss top-frets access a lot there, because soukous solo guitar makes heavy use of the top frets. If you don't know what soukous is, you can learn about it here:

...and we have a couple threads on the best guitars for playing this type of music (focus on access 'up-the-neck'):

Not expecting anything worth a damn, she dragged out a horribly torn case. Inside was a Japanese Profile Strat copy, named "Black Magic", with a horrible faded red paint job and strange looking pick guard with stars on it. Nothing even vaguely black or voodoo about it, but $25 seemed like the right price for a wall hanging.

After taking it home for an in-depth analysis, I realized this was a prime example of the "project guitar" - worth nothing, oxidized & rusted metal parts, shitty pick ups, hideous paint. Without even plugging it in once, I began tearing things off it, learning just how these magical beasts we love actually work.

After many sweaty hours, I was finally down to stripping the body. Seeing wood for the first time, I began speculating what exact species had been used. At first it was maple, then poplar. As more paint fell, the mystery continued. What kind of wood was this, with five different grains in it?

With all the paint off, the mystery was solved. Not one, or two, but FIVE DIFFERENT SPECIES OF WOOD WAS USED FOR THE BODY CONSTRUCTION!!! It's soooooooo crazy! On a good note, some of them are actually "tone woods", so there's hope yet. Work has stopped until the spring on the repaint job, but I have scored some American Strat pickups and other tasty parts for it from the store. One day, "Black Magic" will rise again!!!

I bought a refinished 59 Les Paul standard with sunburst and a single piece maple top in 1986 from Guitar Center in San Francisco. About a week later I happened to pick up a copy of Gibson Electrics and upon closer inspection of the Les Paul on the cover, I was thriled to see that it was the same guitar that I had just bought. Can you imagine?

Anyway the guitar has been tucked away in my anvil flight case. It's in excellent condition and the red color has totally faded into a mellow yellow tint. It sure plays well, except I prefer to play my refinished and repaired 57 Strat w/o tremolo bar.

Just wondering if this guitar is worth anything now.

I have a question here. I want to buy a new electric, but dont know which one to get. I have done some homework on it, and the thing shrunk down to these competators:

Ibanez RG1570 Prestige ($750 USD)

Ibanez RG2550E Prestige. ($900 USD app.)

Jackson DKMG Dinky. ($750 USD)

Now I play mostly rock/metal stuff, maybe step into shred territories too. I want something that plays good, and looks cool too. Need really fast neck, and whammy as well. I have seen Prestige necks, and they are very fast necks. Love em. Jackson offer is also impressive. Now if anyone has tried out any of em, or atleast has enough idea to give me a comparison tone wise, plz advise. I am waiting anxiously. Thanks.

I'll go first. I had a 1967 Gibson SG Special in that dark cherry color. It was a leftover my dad bought me when I was 12. Man I'd love to have that back. Funny I can't remember what I traded it in for....

Hi gang ... I picked up a great looking hollow-body Teisco guitar from a junk store but it was incomplete (no strings, bridge, tremolo arm or spring). I thought I'd fix it up as it is a beautiful looking instrument so I bought a tune-o-matic style roller bridge, Floyd-Rose arm (couldn't find an original) and spring and put on a new set of strings. To my amazement, this thing is an absolute delight ... it has a warm, melodic "chime" to it, reminiscent of early British rock tracks. The neck is dead straight and by modifying the bridge base thickness, I got the action nice and low. There are no holes in the body for the bridge, so it had a floating bridge that relied on string tension to hold it there, from day one. It's a Gibson ES-335 copy, for sure and I certainly didn't expect it to sound so damn good. I've checked the "Teisco twangers" site and several others, but just can't work out what era and model this is. It is 40cm wide, so I thought it could be a Vegas 40 or EP-11T. It has a thin body, 5cm thick. Scale length is 24-3/4". The headstock end is different ... it doesn't sweep out as wide at the end. It has a solid metal "Teisco" badge in italic text, held on with two pins. The fret-board has a zero fret and there are rectangular pearlite inlays, not round dots. The two pick-ups have round, not square pole faces. The four pots are much higher around the f-hole than the Teiscos I've seen to date. The pick-up switch is a three-way toggle (Les Paul style), not a rotary. There is no identifying mark or serial number anywhere. All it has on the back is a shiny metallic sticker on the headstock saying "Steel reinforced neck". So what is it? Can anyone identify it? I'd be happy if it was something like a 1966 Vegas 40, but how can you tell? To see a pic, please click on: www.users.bigpond.com/powerit/teisco1.jpg Any comments at all would be much appreciated. Many thanks... Frank

cover bands never get any cred. it's always the original bands that get all the kudos. and that's fine, i've been in original bands myself and it's a very difficult task. but working all week long and then playing 34 weekends a year is difficult too. when i played in original bands, we only had to play for an hour on a given night. in cover bands, it's 4 hours PLUS pack-in time PLUS pack-out time. loads of practive, driving, emails, web stuff, it's very difficult.

so if we don't help each other, then who will.

It is in pretty good shape besides a few blemishes in the finish, a missing pop-in whammy bar, and the lower set of hummbuckers seem to have a short in them or something....they worked fine when I gave it to my brother-in-law, but now that I have it back, they are not working at all. It has the origional hard-shell case with it too. This is not the Korean "Squire" model, it is the set neck version that came from Japan. And I don't know if it matters or not, but the color is metallic black.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I'd like to get a good lead tone with sustain and harmonics but without having to put tons of gain. I own a great amp, (italian top brand Brunetti, www.brunetti.it) so there's no problem about right gear or axe (s).

Hearing guitarists like EVH, Petrucci etc, you can notice they have sustain, but also clearness without loosing precision because of excessive gain. It almost sounds like they're playing with a crunch/clean tone sometimes.
So what's behind that ? particular effects (doesn't sound like) ?, compression ?, any tips on that ?
Thank you

I've been playing the electric guitar for some time now, and I thought it would be neat to have an effects processor. The question is: which is the right one?

I once had a friend's GFX-4 two days long and I couldn't get enough of it. I've googled around and GFX has furthermore a 5 and a 8 model. Both seem cool to me, but I'm not sure which one to purchase (if there isn't anything better).

I mostly play at home, as a relax method after hard days ;) Nevertheless, I'd like an effects processor for a lifetime.

I'm not really sure about which one to chose, though. GFX-8 seems unbeatable, but GFX-5 has more effects (on the list). Perhaps is some Digitech worth the effort?

Anyway, I'd really appreciate it, if someone could enlighten my way :)
I've tried a couple mikes -- one I borrowed worked best, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. I bought one at Radio Shack (intended for voice) and I need to set it right in front of the guitar (electric) to pick up anything so the sounds is ok (just ok) but it sits so close to the guitar I might bump it.. In front of the amp it sounds like it's miles away no matter the volume level.

What should I do? Is a mic made for instruments much better? Is omni-directional better than uni-directional? Is there a particular mic and/or mic set up which is best? Any recommendations would help because I just can't get anything to work right.

It kept the Wah-style pedal design of the Whammy, but used it instead to control synth bass & string pads, psychedelic reverse delays, ring modulation, even a primitive arpeggiator. Still cool (if harder to use) were the sound that mimicked stopping a reel-to-reel tape with your finger and the one that sounded like you sampled yourself like 50 times, then did a bad CD burn of it. Truly Sick. And Sweet.

I have a spare for every other string (the last set I bought was the last time I broke a string, and it was also the low E that time)... I need to find less-breakable strings... this one was a DR string... I think I need to put some sort of titanium Samoan ass strings on my guitar... Any recommendations? I need something extremely resistant to breakage...

I really wish I could get Teflon saddles for my Epiphone Les Paul's bridge, as that is where breakage occurs 95% of the time... I have a Bigsby vibrato on it and I'm sure using that just aggravates this syndrome... The aftermarket bridge saddles I've seen for sale will fit on standard Gibson Les Paul saddle screws but not on my guitar's screws... I also considered replacing the Epi bridge with a Gibson bridge but the post screws are different gauge... And so the holes in my guitar that they fit into are different size than a Gibson's...So I would have to have it done by a tech as I don't have the necessary tools and materials to perform such a change... But in the meantime, i just want to find the toughest strings out there...

Greg Bennett Ic 20 (I believe has duncan designed humbuckers)
Washburn x50 (not the x50PRO, but the other discontinued one)
Aria XL STD

i did a quick search, and found GT 6L6R's and 616S's. does anyone know if the 6L6S's are worth the extra cash? or which sound better?

I can hear my guitar's signal when the effect is engaged and when it's not, but it's not flanging the signal anymore. There is a slight volume drop when the effect should be engaged, too. Any suggestions?

I figured they must be a real piece of crap because they are so cheap. But I read a lot of good reviews. They rival the Mexican Fender Strat.

They have a plywood body and so-so electronics. But the neck is tip-top.
I think it would be neat just to have one to futz around and experiment with. You would not worry about ruining it as you would an American Strat for instance

I'm still recovering from a nasty finger injury, so instead of my usual "acoustic through a bunch of pedals and an amp" show, I'll be playing electric the same way. No backing band, just me and my guitar. So, I'd really appreciate it if any of you in the Los Angeles are would come out to the Talking Stick (1630 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica, 90405) Monday at 8pm. Hope to see you there!
